Design for real life architecture

A lot of extension designs start from a Pinterest board or a photo from a magazine, and there’s nothing wrong with that as a starting point. The part that matters more is whether the layout actually suits how you use your house day to day, not just how it photographs.

Ask what’s actually broken first

Before we draw anything, we usually ask what doesn’t work about the current layout. Is the kitchen too small for how you cook? Do you need a place for muddy shoes and school bags that isn’t the hallway? Is the dining table only ever used at Christmas? These answers shape the design more than any style reference does.

Storage gets forgotten until it’s too late

Open-plan spaces look great in photos with nothing on the counters. In real life, storage for everyday clutter, coats, bikes, bins, needs to be planned in from the start, or the beautiful new kitchen ends up buried under it within a few months.
