What Building Regulations Actually Require for Insulation
Part L of the building regulations covers the thermal performance of new extensions and conversions, and it’s one of the more technical parts of a building regulations submission, but the principle is straightforward: the new part of your house shouldn’t leak heat any more than current standards allow.
Different elements, different targets
Walls, roofs, floors and windows each have their own minimum thermal performance requirements. A rear extension wall typically needs a different insulation build-up to an existing solid wall, which is why extensions often end up better insulated than the original house.
